It shows the campground's sections from west to east: Area One, Dowd's and Beach Road on the west side, the Cedar Knoll loops in the middle, and the Pequot, Tunxis, Mohegan and Podunk loops on the east side. Two marked walkways, from the Quinnipiac and Podunk loops, lead to the beach. Every site number is printed on the map.

Where to Get the Map

How the Campground Is Laid Out

The campground fills the northwest part of the park, between Route 1 and the beach parking lots. You reach it from the main park road just past the entrance, where the camp office and a visitor parking lot sit near the park entrance control. The sites are open and grassy, set along paved loops and straight rows, with patches of salt marsh and a couple of small ponds between the sections.

West Side: Area One, Dowd's and Beach Road

Area One is a grid of straight rows at the far west end. The amphitheater, a volleyball court and a phone are along its edge. Friends of Hammonasset says the camp hosts show movies three times a week at Dowd's Amphitheater. Next to it is Dowd's, another block of lettered rows. Beach Road is a single line of numbered sites along the road that runs south toward the camp store and concession at the bottom of the map.

Center: Cedar Knoll

Cedar Knoll is the middle of the campground, near the campers' activity area and the playground. Its loops are named Pootatuck, Nipmuck, Algonquin, Mohawk and Quinnipiac. The Quinnipiac loop has one of the two marked walkways to the beach.

East Side: Pequot, Tunxis, Mohegan and Podunk

The eastern loops sit closest to the main park road. Pequot is nearest the entrance, then Tunxis, Mohegan and Podunk farther south. The camp manager's office is near Mohegan, and Friends of Hammonasset says bingo is held three times a week at the Big Brown House in Mohegan. Podunk has the second marked walkway to the beach.

Picking a Site

Cabins

The eight rustic cabins appear on DEEP's whole-park map as camping cabins inside the campground. They rent by the week, Sunday to Sunday. Rules and prices are on our camping page.

Getting Around From the Campground

It's a short walk to the beach from most sites, and a longer ride to Meigs Point at the east end of the park, where the nature center and jetty are. Friends of Hammonasset suggests bringing bikes for the paved roads and the trail to Meigs Point.

A Note on Map Age

DEEP's campground map is a drawn illustration, and the park map is dated 2012. Loops and site numbers rarely change, but facilities can move. If a specific site matters, check it on ReserveAmerica or call the campground office at (203) 245-1817 in season.
